Festive buying drives GST mop-up to second-highest level. Read the key points, why it matters and what businesses should watch next.

Festive Demand Lifts October GST Collections

India's gross Goods and Services Tax collections rose 22.9 per cent year-on-year to Rs 2.31 lakh crore in October, the second-highest monthly figure recorded, according to data cited in a report. October was the second straight month in which mop-up exceeded Rs 2 lakh crore, and the latest number trails only the record Rs 2.43 lakh crore mopped up in April. The 22.9 per cent expansion is also the quickest pace seen so far in the current financial year.

What The Numbers Show

Domestic transaction collections climbed 16 per cent to more than Rs 1.59 lakh crore, while import-linked revenue jumped 42 per cent to Rs 72,246 crore. The October total comprised Central GST of Rs 42,935 crore, State GST of Rs 51,340 crore and Integrated GST of over Rs 1.37 lakh crore. Refunds rose 6.5 per cent to Rs 27,934 crore; net of refunds, collections grew 26 per cent to over Rs 2.03 lakh crore. For April-October, gross collections increased 13.2 per cent to over Rs 14.77 lakh crore, with net revenue up 13 per cent at Rs 12.69 lakh crore.

Saurabh Agarwal of EY India linked the performance to resilient economic activity and better compliance, noting festive demand could carry the momentum forward. For taxpayers, sustained buoyancy despite rate reductions is giving the GST Council room to pursue further reforms, according to Deloitte's Mahesh Jaising, who said the agenda is shifting toward simplification, quicker refunds, smoother input tax credit flows and fewer compliance pain points. Higher import-linked collections also suggest stronger inbound trade, which affects credit and documentation workflows.
