GST collections surge 23% to Rs 2.31 lakh crore in October. Read the key points, why it matters and what businesses should watch next.

October Records Second Highest GST Mop-Up

Gross Goods and Services Tax collections rose 22.9 per cent year-on-year to more than Rs 2.31 lakh crore in October, according to government data released on November 1. This marks the second consecutive month in which monthly gross GST crossed the Rs 2 lakh crore mark, and the October figure is second only to the record mop-up of about Rs 2.43 lakh crore recorded in April. The 22.9 per cent year-on-year growth is also the fastest pace of gross collections recorded so far in the current financial year.

For the April-October period, gross GST collection grew 13.2 per cent to over Rs 14.77 lakh crore, while net collections rose 13 per cent to more than Rs 12.69 lakh crore. The gap between gross and net figures reflects refunds and other adjustments, which compliance teams typically track when assessing effective tax outflows.

Why The Numbers Matter For Businesses

Sustained high collections suggest broadening compliance and steady economic activity, which has implications for input tax credit flows and working capital planning. For tax and finance teams, the pace of gross growth matters because it indicates how much revenue the government is raising at the invoice stage, while net growth shows what finally accrues after refunds. A widening divergence between the two can signal higher refund claims, often relevant for exporters and businesses with inverted duty structures.

The October data follows the reform announced on September 22, 2025, which restructured the GST rate framework. The earlier four-slab structure of 5, 12, 18 and 28 per cent has been replaced by a two-tier structure, with most goods and services now taxed at 5 and 18 per cent. Ultra-luxury items attract 40 per cent, while tobacco and related products remain in the 28 per cent plus cess category. Businesses that have not yet aligned invoicing, ERP masters and classification logic to the revised slabs should treat this as a priority.
