‘Only rate hike or pause ahead’: RBI Governor rules out rate cut in near-term. Read the key points, why it matters and what businesses should watch next.

RBI Hikes Repo Rate To 5.50%

The Reserve Bank of India's Monetary Policy Committee raised the repo rate by 25 basis points to 5.50 per cent, shifting its stance from 'neutral' to 'calibrated tightening'. Governor Sanjay Malhotra stated that with prevailing conditions, a rate cut is not on the table in the near term, and future action can only be a hike or a pause, depending on evolving conditions and the outlook.

The MPC voted unanimously for the increase. The Governor noted that inflation and its outlook are no longer benign as they were last year. Headline CPI inflation is expected to average close to 5.8 per cent over the next three quarters, while core inflation is projected at 4.4 per cent for this financial year. The committee observed that recalibrating the policy rate was necessary in this environment.

Why It Matters For Businesses

Higher borrowing costs affect both households and enterprises carrying existing debt. Steeper EMIs, costlier working capital and weaker investment are likely outcomes if tightening continues. The central bank has effectively prioritised inflation control over immediate growth and credit demand concerns.

The MPC flagged that monetary policy mainly works by limiting second-round effects, such as inflation expectations and firm-level pricing behaviour, which take time to appear and are hard to isolate in data. Indicators like core inflation and diffusion indices are used to track the generalisation of inflation. The Governor said there is some evidence of elevated inflation expectations and broadening price pressures, though limited signs of supply-side pressures embedding into pricing behaviour. Risks also exist from strong growth in monetary and credit aggregates, even as demand-side pressures remain limited.
