Rural consumer confidence worsened for six straight months: RBI survey. Read the key points, why it matters and what businesses should watch next.
Rural Sentiment Slips For Sixth Month
The Reserve Bank of India's September 2026 Rural Consumer Confidence Survey shows rural households turning more downbeat about their present situation, even as their expectations for the year ahead stay positive. The Current Situation Index dropped to 90.6 in September from 91.7 in July, continuing a slide that began after January's 100.5 and leaving it well below the 100.9 recorded in September 2025. The survey drew 8,799 responses from rural and semi-urban India.
The gloom is spread across measures. The net response on the general economic situation moved from -11.9 to -14.1, employment from -8.0 to -10.5, and income from -8.7 to -9.9, meaning more respondents reported worsening conditions than improvement. On income specifically, only 20.6% reported a rise over the past year while 30.5% reported a fall, against 24.5% and 26.5% a year earlier.
Inflation Perceptions Climb Sharply
Price anxiety has intensified. Median perceived current inflation rose to 6.8% in September from 6.1% in July and 5.9% in May, while one-year-ahead expectations climbed to 7.9% from 7.4% and 6.8% in March. As many as 93.2% of respondents said prices had risen over the past year, and 85.9% expect further increases.
Why It Matters For Businesses
Spending has not collapsed. The spending net response improved to 79.6 from 77.4, with essentials at 84.2 and non-essentials at 39.3. The Future Expectations Index eased to 112.8 from 113.6 but remains above 100, though far below January's 129.3. For companies dependent on rural demand, the signal is mixed: volumes may hold up while household finances feel stretched.
What To Watch Next
Track whether income and employment perceptions stabilise, whether inflation expectations keep rising, and whether the FEI stays above 100. A sustained gap between weak current sentiment and firm future optimism would be difficult to maintain.
