Bank Nifty Slips Below 55,000

Indian equity benchmarks recorded losses across a holiday-shortened four-session week, with the Sensex declining 2.15% and the Nifty 50 falling 2.36%. The Sensex gave up 1,605.44 points and the Nifty 50 shed 546.15 points. Surging crude oil prices amid the West Asia crisis were cited as the trigger, and the four straight sessions of decline erased close to ₹21 lakh crore in investor wealth.

The banking index came under particular strain. Nifty Bank fell 2.79% for the week to settle at 54,287.35, having opened at 55,827.45. It slipped below the 55,000 mark, ended the week down 1,556.65 points, formed a strong bearish weekly candle and snapped a two-week winning streak.

Why It Matters For Businesses

The weakness among banking counters was uneven. Yes Bank was the weakest of the 14 Nifty Bank constituents, dropping 10.84%, followed by IDFC First Bank at 7.6% and Axis Bank at 5.58%. PNB, Federal Bank and Union Bank of India gained, while ICICI Bank edged up marginally. Over one month, Yes Bank fell 32.19%, IDFC First Bank 17.51% and IndusInd Bank 13.66%, while Federal Bank and ICICI Bank rose 4.35% and 4.32% and Kotak Mahindra Bank gained 3.31%. Year to date, Nifty Bank is down 8.89%, against 13.51% for the Nifty 50 and 14.19% for the Sensex. For companies with borrowing programmes, treasury exposure or listed banking counterparts, the sector's slide affects collateral values, cost of capital expectations and disclosure-sensitive market conditions.
