Profit before taxes of their natural gas marketing business rose more than two-and-half times during the quarter.
GAIL Profit Doubles On Gas Marketing
State-owned GAIL reported a net profit of ₹4,650.22 crore for the September quarter, more than double the figure recorded a year earlier. Revenue from operations climbed 31.2% year-on-year to ₹45,924 crore. The strongest contribution came from the company's natural gas marketing vertical, which is also its largest revenue earner.
Within that segment, profit before tax rose more than two-and-half times to ₹3,284.3 crore, while segment revenue grew 31% year-on-year to ₹41,226.04 crore. Natural gas transmission volumes for the quarter stood at 130.1 MMSCMD. GAIL has guided for average transmission volumes of roughly 126-127 MMSCMD across FY27.
Why The Numbers Matter
For companies that buy or transport gas, GAIL's results offer a read on supply conditions and pricing. The quarter's performance was shaped by the West Asia crisis, which has run for more than eight months and disrupted the company's gas volumes from the Middle East. Director (Finance) Satish Kumar Sinha, speaking on the post-results analyst call, said the shortfall was partly offset through portfolio flexibility and spot sourcing.
GAIL lifted 18 spot cargoes in the quarter, up from eight in the first quarter. International gas prices stayed volatile and elevated at around $30-32 per MMBtu. For industrial consumers, that combination of disrupted term volumes and costly spot replacement is relevant to input cost planning and contract structuring.
The marketing segment's outsized profit growth also reflects how sourcing mix and price movements flow through to margins, a factor that matters to counterparties assessing GAIL's credit and supply reliability.
What To Watch
Transmission volumes are the key operational metric to track against the FY27 guidance of 126-127 MMSCMD. Any sustained shortfall would signal weaker throughput and could affect transportation tariffs and capacity utilisation.
